What is Currently Not Collectible status?

Currently Not Collectible (CNC), sometimes called status 53, is an IRS designation that temporarily halts active collection when paying your tax debt would prevent you from covering necessary living expenses. Levies and garnishments stop, but the debt itself remains, and interest and penalties keep accruing while the account is in CNC.

How do I qualify for Currently Not Collectible status?

You qualify by showing the IRS, usually through a Collection Information Statement like Form 433-F or 433-A, that your allowable monthly living expenses meet or exceed your monthly income — leaving nothing to pay toward the debt. The IRS uses its Collection Financial Standards to determine which expenses count and at what amounts.

Does the debt go away in Currently Not Collectible status?

No. CNC pauses collection but does not forgive the debt. Interest and penalties continue to accrue, and the IRS can file or maintain a Notice of Federal Tax Lien. However, the 10-year collection statute keeps running, so if the account stays uncollectible until that statute expires, the remaining balance is legally written off.

Will the IRS review my Currently Not Collectible status again?

Yes. CNC is not permanent. The IRS periodically reviews accounts, often triggered when your reported income rises above a certain threshold on future returns. If your financial situation improves, the IRS can remove the CNC designation and resume collection, potentially moving you into an installment agreement.
